Han River Barbeque - Buffet Korean Barbeque @ Simei Eastpoint

Han River Barbeque Restaurant
3 Simei St 6 #04-15 Eastpoint Mall Singapore 528833Tel : 6789-9555

Eversince Korean Barbeque stormed into Singapore, there are many such similar places growing like mushrooms here. But not many of those are halal. Han River is one of the halal choices for families, especially during weekends. Do call to book your seats. It's also one of the cheapest buffet Korean barbeque in Singapore. Only 1 branch in Singapore.
For those fancy to show your barbequeing skills, will be glad to come here. A wide selection of spread of meats (chicken, beef, mutton and lamb) and seafoods (fish, lala, mussels, marinated with sauses like black pepper, satay, sambal and many more ..... other choices of vegetables, fish balls, cockles, local hawker desserts like, jelly, chendol, ais kacang and ice-cream are available too. They also provide a huge choices of dipping sauses for the barbeque. You can choose either tomyam or chicken soup for the steamboat. Drinks are not free flow.
No worries of smoke lingering around as their air blower are doing a good job. Seatings are mostly long tables with other families seating next to you.

A popular halal buffet choice for families especially during weekends. Eat till you drop ! ... They served Japanese, Chinese, Seafood (Oysters, Mussels, Lobsters, Salmon etc...) and Western food. Free flow of soft drinks, western and local desserts, ice-cream and fruits are served too. I loved their grilled cheese oysters !!!..... sooooo good !!!
Seatings are plentiful but do call them to reserve your seats if you have a big group. Do note their Clementi branch has 2 levels of buffet spread, both serving different spread. So if you were to seat at the other level, you will need to go up and down to get your other food !!!! .... eat more but still possible to loose some fats while still walloping your buffet hahahaa..... but just be mentally prepared on this issue. Many would still prefer to visit the other 2 branches.
You can placed your colourful clips provided on your table with your table number on it, to place the hotplate dishes, satay, grilled fish, porridge etc ..... at the respective counters. The waiting staff will bring your order to your table once it's ready.

No matter how tempting those food are PLEASE do NOT waste your food !!! .... STOP taking / ordering more food if your digestive system gonna explode any second !! .... Buffet are places where you eat as much as you CAN ... NOT ... eat as much till you DIE !!!! Don't be gready !!

On another note, its not a place to bring someone who is a small eater. Not a good idea at all .... It will be a waste bringing them, they can pay 1/3 of the price to a non buffet places.
Good place for BIG gathering, families, friends ... the place is quite noisy with people talking, eating, gossiping, commenting, drinking, BURPING and some may even fart !!! ..... BEWARE ;p

Probably a place for the rich who enjoys plush luxurious ambience to enjoy the normal hawker buffet fare. But it's an expensive place to have such food for a bourgeois or peasant (more accurate i think ;)) like me. But ...sometimes you do feel like giving yourself a BIG treat to a grand place for simple food, don't you ?... so bet this will be it. Been there for about 4 times with my hubby, same thing - we went there on special occasions before Carousel opened. It seems like the only 5 star hotel which serves halal buffet spread. Well, that was then .... (before carousel opened heheee...). During Ramadhan, the pipe music here plays Warna - a local malay radio station which airs the Azan. Think it's the only place Muslims will feel at home and welcomed in a grand 5 star hotel where many others are too westernized.

Back to the food, as I said, its hawker buffet spread. You can find Malay, Indian (South & North), Chinese, Nyonya, kuehs, local desserts such as chendol, goreng pisang and many others. A great place to recommend if you like to have such ambience and halal buffet. The staff there are just wonderful, making sure that your finished plates are cleared, smiling, topping up your sky juice without even asking. Professional .......... Local hawker food with a class of service and ambience. And remember to reserve your seats to avoid disappointment. Sorry I forgot the prices ... prob about the same like Carousel. Not cheap !!!

Understand that Royal Plaza on Scotts is owned by Sultan Brunei so the food there are all Halal (except for the wine of course) ..... Here is definitely a MUST for most Singaporeans to fine dine to a Halal Buffet spread. For dinner, they served, Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Indian, Western, Mediterranean and an enormous spread of fresh seafood. A rotisserie sizzles waiting to whip up your appetite. Don't forget to check out their wide spread of desserts too. A variety of fruits and marshmellows are available for you to dip into the smooth chocolate fondue.

Many goes there to celebrate special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. Personally been there for about 3 or 4 times celebrating our special occassions too ;p Don't forget to reserve your seats to avoid disappointment. Buffet dinner starts from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. They have a Musollah too, marvelous !!!

Will be going there again next week for my hubby's birthday, more pics will be up then.

A fine place to bring your friends if you want a decent nice place to eat fine Indonesian food. Its owned by a Chinese Muslim Indonesian, cooking their authentic dishes here since 1989, its definitely have spiced up Singapore taste buds.

Their famous signature dish - Ikan Otah Kukus is a MUST try for everyone. Other must try dishes are Cumi Bali (sotong), Cumi Goreng Istimewa, Beef Rendang and Ayam Panggang (grilled chicken). Lunch hour is crowded with office workers from nearby offices. But .... I used to drive all the way downtown for their food from Jurong where I used to work !!
Check out their official website above for the full menu and prices. To avoid disappointment, you may call them to reserve your seats.

Hajjah Maimunah Restaurant & Catering (Nasi Padang) - Jln Pisang & Joo Chiat

Hajjah Maimunah Restaurant
11 Jalan Pisang (Arab Street) Tel : 6291 3132
20 Joo Chiat Road #01-02

This place is a hit with many Singaporeans for Nasi Padang food. They served a wide variety of dishes including, tahu goreng, ikan bakar, rendang and their famous asam pedas fish. Not forgetting they also serve varities of traditional malay kuehs too.

Their main branch in Jalan Pisang looks much better after an upgrading but became smaller as it used to have 2 units, aircon and non-aircon. It's very packed during lunch hours. Not a fine dining kind of place but it's a sure fine food haven.

Their new branch in Joo Chiat (opp Joo Chiat Complex, Geylang), has 2 levels. So there are more tables available. The service is fast and no worries of how you will have to carry your dishes up to the 2nd floor. Waiting staff will make sure that your orders will be on your table.

Prices are reasonable, a little bit more than foodstall but still very cheap than eating in a Malay / Indonesian restaurant.

Warong Nasi Pariaman (Nasi Padang) - North Bridge Road

Warong Nasi Pariaman
(corner of North Bridge Rd and Kandahar St, near Sultan Mosque)
7.30am to 3pm daily Closed on Sundays and Public Holidays

Probably the oldest Nasi Padang stall in Singapore. My Indonesian grandad loves this place very much. He said the food is very authentic Padang style. My grandad was born in Binjai, Medan Indonesia. He will always visit this place each time he's in town. This place was recommended to me by my auntie. Lots of memories for her at this place. The food and the place seems like the old days..... but NOT the price. The prices then were way much cheaper. But it's still very reasonably priced compared to eating in an Indonesian restaurant in town.

The signature dish of Warong Nasi Pariaman is the ayam bakar (barbequed chicken served in a mildly spicy thick coconut milk gravy), a must-eat dish at the stall. Other specialties are the beef rendang, ikan bakar (barbequed fish, marinated in tamarind-based sauce, grilled over charcoal and served with sweet black soya sauce, onion, rings, green chillies and lime) and the sambal goreng (a mixture of long beans, tempeh and fried beancurd).

One has to be there early to get a seat at the warong (stall). By noon, all the tables will be taken as the office crowd swarms the stall. To get packed lunches, one may have to queue for at least 15 minutes. Families usually come for Saturday lunches. Friday is particularly busy for the stall as Malays will visit in droves after their Friday prayers at the nearby Sultan Mosque.

Hajjah Mona Nasi Padang - Geylang Market

Hajjah Mona Nasi Padang
11 Eunos Road 5 #01-301 Time: 0800 - 1900, Close on Wednesday
(The temporary Geylang Market, next to Paya Lebar Singapore Post)

Drop by to this stall next time you visit Geylang Market or within the vicinity. Here you can find good Nasi Ambeng, Nasi Rawon, Nasi Jenganan and Sambal Goreng Pengantin. Their bestsellers includes Lemak Nangka, Ikan Bakar, Rendang and Ayam Lemak Cili Api.

Its pretty heavy for breakfast, heheee..... consider your meal there before 12noon as "BRUNCH". After a meal there, you are sure to feel heavy and sleepy. Price is cheap, seating is difficult to get and do share your table with others if you have some available seats. Oh pleassseeee, no reserving seats with tissues !!! Singaporeans ..... that's very UGLY !!!!

Nasi Padang River Valley - 55 Zion Road

Nasi Padang River Valley
55 Zion Road Tel: 6734 3383 Opening Hours: 9am to 9pm; closed on public holidays

One of the best old time Nasi Padang food you can find in Singapore. They served about 30 different Padang dishes to choose from. The familiar dishes such as Rendang, Lemak Cili Api, Sotong Berlado, Ayam Korma (padang style) are just different from the many "nasi padang" stalls you find elsewhere. Food really taste home cooked and serving such huge varities is very traditional in real Padang makan places back in Indonesia.

Worth to try their food. Sure you will not regret it at all ! The prices are reasonable, much much cheaper than going to an Indonesian restaurant in town.

Welcome Note ...

Assalamualaikum,

Living in Singapore with many selections and varities of food, finding the tastiest, the cheapest and the most convenient is not as simple as finding a HALAL one. Trust me, from personal experience seeing many of our Muslim friends/relatives eating non-halal food makes you wonder WHY these people are willing to gobble down non-halal/ uncertain status of the food that they eat. Places with obvious pork menu e.g. Carl's Junior, Olio Dome to name a few, you can still see many "Muslims" or malays (in this so called modern society it does not mean that you are a Muslim eventhough you are malay here in Singapore) dine in those places.
The most obvious misconception is that seeing Muslim selling the food, it definitely makes you think it's HALAL ...... surprise, surprise, it's NOT !!!!!! Isn't that supposed to be the most simple way of telling you if the food is halal??

I had such experience whilst in Sydney airport. Muslim Pakistani teens working for a fast food joint, wearing hijabs looking very enthusiastic behind the counter. As the joint is not one of the popular known fast food e.g. McDonald's, Hungry Jack's or KFC, which are NOT halal there, so seeing those teens, you would be thinking, HEY THIS FAST FOOD IS HALAL !!! But WAIT !!!!!! ..... As I was queueing, scanning thru the long list of menu on the wall........ they're selling BACON !!! ....staring blankly and asking myself, hey prob it's not pork bacon !!! .... I felt sooo stupid for a second cos BACON is pork ... dduuhhhh ..... Hey maybe I was wrong, next was my turn, I asked the Paki gal, is bacon HALAL ??!!!! ....... she looked blankly at me and said there is NO halal bacon ... its PORK sweetheart. Masha-Allah ... I asked her again, then what did the Arab lady who was before me bought ?? She puts on hijab so obviously she is Muslim. So I asked the gal again if I am the only one who had asked her about the halal status of the food they're selling !!! eerrr....she just stared at me blankly, again ..... She told me Muslim can take the fish burger meal, which consists of the fish burger, fries and drink BUT I was also told that the fries are not halal as it's fried in lard. So she gonna switch it to a coleslaw for me. After paying, I sat and look at the Arab lady who now sits next to me, just checking if she bought anything else besides the fish burger meal. Looking at my pathetically looking burger, I decided to just make do with the drink. See? It's safer to ask than assume the food is Halal eventhough the staff are wearing hijab.

That's Sydney, it's not as easy as getting Halal food back home. But HELLOoooo, the similar thing happened to me here at home, OK !! I believe many have heard of Botak Jones ... the owner, an ang-moh is married to a Malay lady, so here again you would guess that the food is halal. It's the best looking American burger serving served in the heartlands. The same thing, I asked a senior staff there if the food is halal, but was told that the sausages were NOT, as the skin is made of pork bellies!!! .... hey that was when they were in Tuas. Now its found in Ang Mo Kio and I heard Bedok. Who knows it's probably halal already BUT remember to just ask if the food is halal. Many of the staff are malays, another confusing issue here for many like us. No harm asking !!! Don't eat if you are still not certain. There are many muslim who may work in non-halal certified food places but when you asked them about the halal thingy, they are sure to give you an honest reply. So open your mouth to ask OK!!!

Well, not all muslim eating places may be Halal certified by MUIS eventhough the stall ownders are muslim. Muslims must always ensure that food is Halal for consumption. So we have to exercise caution and discretion when patronising eating establishments.
Alright, another reason why I have this blog is ..... to just compile the best halal/muslim eating places and make it as a future quick reference for myself and my hubby. At times we do forget the nice little places that we've been to. We both are food lovers and we eat out most weekends (against his preference, of cos). We both really appreciate great food even if its from at a little corner or secluded places and it's not necessarily have to be plush or luxurious.

Wassalam,
MaKan Halal
